To comprehensively enhance the refined control level of our core grinding processes, our company completed an upgrade of the online quality monitoring system in May 2024, deploying multiple Xoptix online laser particle size analyzers at key process points. The specific configuration is as follows: one unit installed at the discharge end of the raw material mill, one unit at the discharge end of the coal mill, and two units at the discharge end of the cement finish mill. Since its commissioning, the system has operated stably and reliably, providing real-time and accurate data for particle size control and process optimization of raw meal, pulverized coal, and finished cement.
The system enables continuous, automatic monitoring of the particle size of raw meal, pulverized coal, and finished cement. Data from each monitoring point is integrated in real-time into the central control system, forming a comprehensive particle size quality monitoring network. Based on the stable and precise online data provided by this network, operators can promptly grasp the discharge status of each mill and quickly adjust process parameters, significantly enhancing the control capability and response speed of the production process. This not only optimizes the homogenization effect of raw meal and the combustion characteristics of pulverized coal but also ensures the stability of cement product performance.
By deploying online particle size analyzers across multiple key production lines, our company has successfully upgraded from the traditional mode of manual intermittent sampling and testing to a fully automated, continuous real-time monitoring mode. This change has significantly reduced the frequency of manual testing in each process. While effectively alleviating the workload of laboratory personnel, it fundamentally avoids potential quality fluctuations caused by delays in manual testing and sampling deviations. As a result, the particle size consistency of raw meal, pulverized coal, and cement products has been continuously improved, laying a solid foundation for the stable operation of the kiln and grinding systems and the enhancement of final product quality.

We have implemented 2 Xoptix online particle size analyzers into our Aluminosilicates (Anorthosite, Nepheline) and Silica Flour production lines. Xoptix was installed in 2019 on Mill 1 and in 2025 on Mill 3 (multispot system) to allow 24/7 unmanned operations. During its operation, the equipment has performed stably and reliably, providing real-time and accurate data for particle size control and process optimization.
The system enables continuous, fully automatic monitoring of production process via providing trends on short time frame and PSD in real time for each moment. Data from each monitoring point is integrated in real-time into the central control system, ensuring full visibility of particle size milling quality.
Based on the stable and precise online data provided by Xoptix, operators can easily monitor mill discharge conditions and respond quickly with necessary process adjustments. The system software is equipped with special alarms that are set by operators and allows 24/7 unmanned operations. This ensures the stability of product and savings on labour. With Xoptix online particle sizing our company has upgraded from the traditional manual sampling and testing to a fully automated, continuous real-time monitoring mode.
Thanks to Xoptix, in addition to the benefits listed above, we were able to increase production by operating night and weekend shifts when operators are not at the plant. Before using Xoptix, we relied on manual sampling during night shifts, with 2 FTE engineers required to ensure quality control. After implementing Xoptix, we reduced night-shift staffing requirements and achieved annual savings of €177,000 — purely through labour optimization. Thanks to these operational savings, the return on investment (ROI) was achieved in well under one year, while also improving process stability and data transparency.

Our company has integrated the British Xoptix online laser particle size analyzer into the petroleum coke grinding system since 2024, coupled with an Advanced Process Control (APC) system, to achieve real-time monitoring and closed-loop automatic adjustment of the - 0.074 mm fine powder purity. Since its commissioning, the system has operated stably with accurate data, providing reliable support for steady quality control of fine materials and the intelligent upgrading of the production process.
The system enables real-time, continuous, and precise detection of petroleum coke fine purity, and through the APC system, it intelligently coordinates with key process parameters such as mill feed rate, classifier speed, and fan valve opening. Once a deviation from the set purity range is detected, the system automatically adjusts relevant parameters without manual intervention, completely resolving issues inherent in traditional manual sampling and testing, such as "data lag, untimely adjustments, and human variability."
After implementing the system, the fluctuation range of fine purity in our company was significantly reduced from the original 65.5%~71% to 68%~69%, greatly enhancing the stability of fine material quality. Meanwhile, the apparent density fluctuation range of green anode blocks was also optimized from 1.61~1.66 g/cm³ to 1.62~1.65 g/cm³, resulting in a marked improvement in the consistency of anode products.
Practice has proven that the closed loop of "online monitoring – real-time feedback – automatic optimization" achieved through the collaboration of the Xoptix online laser particle size analyzer and the intelligent control system has effectively addressed the technical challenges of automatic detection and stable control of fine purity in the carbon industry. This has not only reduced manual testing and adjustment workloads by approximately 70% but has also fundamentally enhanced the precision of process control and the level of production intelligence, providing a solid guarantee for the consistent quality of prebaked anodes.
