Automation and Process Integration

The primary purpose of an online particle size analysis system is to provide continuous, real-time process information to both plant operators and automated control systems. By delivering reliable PSD data directly from the process, Xoptix enables better operational decisions, improved process stability, and advanced automatic control strategies. The measurement data can be used by operators, PLC systems, DCS platforms, or higher-level APC (Advanced Process Control) applications.

Automation can be implemented at several levels depending on the customer's requirements. At the field level, the system can communicate using traditional industrial 4–20 mA analogue loops directly from the control box. This provides a simple and robust method for transmitting key particle size parameters to local control systems and process equipment.

The field control box can also receive commands directly from the customer's PLC or DCS. Functions such as system start-up, shutdown, cleaning cycles, sampler selection, valve operation, alarm handling, and measurement control can all be managed through local automation interfaces, allowing the particle sizing system to become a fully integrated part of the production process.

For more advanced applications, automation can be implemented at a higher level through the Xoptix supervisory PC located in the control room. Communication with plant automation systems is performed using standard industrial protocols such as OPC, allowing seamless integration into existing plant infrastructure. The particle sizer can continuously provide measurement data while also receiving operating commands, configuration settings, and process instructions from the customer's automation system.

Reliable communication between the field installation and the control room is achieved through industrial communication links selected according to site requirements. For larger distances and maximum immunity to electrical interference, fibre optic communication is typically used. For shorter distances, RS422 serial communication or standard Ethernet networks can provide a cost-effective and reliable alternative.

This flexible architecture allows Xoptix systems to support virtually any level of automation, from simple monitoring installations to fully automated process control environments. Whether the objective is operator guidance, closed-loop control, APC integration, or complete plant-wide digitalisation, the system is fully prepared to exchange data and commands with modern industrial automation platforms.
