Slag Grinding
Slag Grinding
Slag grinding is an important application in cement and mineral processing, particularly where ground granulated blast furnace slag is used as a supplementary cementitious material. The particle size distribution of slag has a direct influence on reactivity, strength development, water demand, and final cement performance.
Grinding slag can be challenging because slag is often harder and more abrasive than clinker. Variations in glass content, moisture, feed size, and material hardness can all affect mill performance and product fineness. Maintaining a consistent PSD is essential for stable product quality and reliable downstream use.
Traditional quality control relies on periodic laboratory testing, which gives only intermittent information about the grinding process. Between laboratory results, operators may have limited visibility of whether the product is becoming too coarse or being ground finer than necessary.
Xoptix provides continuous real-time particle size distribution measurement directly from the slag grinding circuit. Operators can immediately see changes in product fineness and respond before material moves outside specification.
One of the key challenges in slag grinding is avoiding unnecessary overgrinding. Slag often requires high grinding energy, so producing material finer than required can significantly increase power consumption and reduce mill capacity.
Real-time PSD monitoring allows the grinding circuit to operate closer to the target specification. This helps reduce product variability, improve confidence in quality, and support more efficient mill operation.
Xoptix measurements can also be used as a feedback signal for advanced process control. Separator speed, feed rate, grinding pressure, airflow, and other variables can be adjusted more effectively using continuous PSD data.
By improving visibility and control of slag fineness, cement producers and grinding plants can achieve more stable product quality, reduced energy consumption, increased throughput, lower laboratory workload, and improved overall grinding efficiency.
