Reproducibility

Reproducibility and long-term stability

Designed for Maximum Reproducibility

The IntelliSizer has been developed with one primary objective: maximum measurement reproducibility. When the same sample is measured repeatedly, the instrument is designed to produce the same particle size distribution every time, with only minimal statistical variation. This level of repeatability is essential for reliable process control, where operators must distinguish genuine process changes from measurement noise. In many practical applications, the short-term reproducibility of the IntelliSizer exceeds that of conventional laboratory particle size analysis, allowing much tighter process control.

Engineering for Long-Term Stability

Exceptional reproducibility is not achieved through software alone—it is built into the mechanical and optical design of the instrument. IntelliSizer uses direct Fourier optical geometry specifically selected for industrial process measurement, unlike the reverse Fourier arrangement commonly used in laboratory instruments. The complete optical assembly is rigidly integrated into a single precision-machined metal body, eliminating relative movement between optical components. With no moving optical parts or mechanical adjustments required during normal operation, the instrument maintains its calibration and measurement stability over many years.

Designed Specifically for Process Measurement

Many laboratory particle size analyzers are promoted as suitable for process applications. IntelliSizer takes the opposite approach—it is designed from the ground up as a dedicated industrial process instrument. Every aspect of its construction prioritizes reproducibility, robustness, and long-term stability rather than laboratory flexibility. The result is a particle size analyzer capable of delivering highly stable measurements continuously under demanding plant conditions, making it ideally suited for automatic process control.

Reproducibility Visible in Everyday Operation

Excellent reproducibility becomes immediately apparent during normal operation. When the production process is stable, consecutive measurements are performed on virtually identical material. Under these conditions, the particle size trend remains remarkably flat, with very little measurement scatter. This gives operators confidence that any observed change represents a genuine process event rather than instrument variation, allowing faster decisions and tighter process optimization.

Stable Correlation Over Time

As with any measuring instrument, occasional laboratory checks may be performed to verify long-term agreement with reference measurements. In practice, these comparisons usually confirm that the IntelliSizer continues to maintain excellent correlation without noticeable drift. Because of the instrument's outstanding long-term stability, many Xoptix customers perform such verification only infrequently, relying instead on the consistency of the continuous online measurements for everyday operation.

Long-Term Verification

For additional confidence, Xoptix provides a dedicated optical reference reticle that can be used to verify long-term instrument performance. This simple verification confirms that the optical system continues to report the correct particle size without drift. Under normal operating conditions, IntelliSizer maintains stable particle size measurements for many years without recalibration or adjustment, demonstrating the robustness of both its optical and mechanical design.

Technologies Behind the Stability

The exceptional stability of the IntelliSizer results from the combination of numerous engineering innovations rather than any single feature. These include a rigid single-body optical construction, the absence of moving optical components, direct Fourier measurement geometry, robust mechanical alignment, industrial-grade electronics, and a high-stability solid-state laser with dedicated control electronics that continuously maintain constant optical output. Additional technologies such as automatic temperature compensation, automatic background measurements, intelligent window cleaning, and high-performance detector electronics further ensure that measurement quality remains consistent throughout years of continuous operation. Together, these technologies enable virtually drift-free particle size measurement with the reproducibility required for advanced process automation.
